As in many other kobudo ryuha in which the sôke is no longer actively taking part in the training, Kukamishin-ryu follows the shihanke system. The family head of the Kuki is still recognized as the sôke (“founder house”) of the school, but supervision over the actual training is done by the shihanke (“teacher house”).

Below are listed the heads of the Kuki family. The names of the 1st up to the 12th sôke Kuki Takatsune are taken from the documents Tenshin Hyoho Shinkenkakkiron and Tenshin Hyoho Taijutsu Kapporon, which were handed down within the Kuki family. The names of the 13th sôke Takayuki onward are based on the Kukike Rekidai Keizu and the Budo Rekidai Keizu (the latter compiled by Takamatsu Chosui).

Kukishin-ryu was transmitted in several lines, among which the Bessho-line, founded by Bessho Shirozaemon Takaaki and the Kikuchi-line, founded by Kikuchi Takemitsu. The line that was taught in the de Kodo Senyokai Shobukyoku before the second world war and that is still being passed on in the present Kukamishin-ryu, is the Ôuchi-lijn (see right).

The 15th generation head teacher Ishitani Matsutarô Tadaaki (born in Akashi) produced two students who would take up leading roles in the continuation of the ryu: Takamatsu Chosui and Iwami Nangaku. Takamatsu, from Banshu, Akashi, received his Menkyo Kaiden in 1913. In 1950 he founded the Kashihara Shobukyoku, from which eventually Bujinkan and related organizations originated. By distancing himself from the Kuki family and by founding his own organization, Takamatsu disappears from view for the ryû.

Iwami Nangaku, from Nagakami in Hyogo, received his Kaiden in 1920. He opened the Kobukan dojo located at the westgate of Shitennoji temple in Osaka and he became the 2nd head of  Kodô Senyôkai Shobukyoku, (thereby being the 16th shihanke). He was succeeded by Matsubara Kahei (松原嘉平, 17th), Kiba Koshiro (木葉幸四郎, 18th) and Fujita Yoshio (藤田義夫, 19th), up tot he current 20th shihanke, Takatsuka Eichoku.

The graph below (from: Shinden Bujutsu, by Takatsuka Eichoku) shows the transmission lines of post war Kukamishin-ryu. The formal line goes from Iwami Nangaku, via Matsubara, Kiba and Fujita, to Takatsuka,
